Jointly organized by the Better Hong Kong Foundation, the Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) in the HKSAR and the Education Bureau of the HKSAR Government, the Final of the 8th Hong Kong Cup Diplomatic Knowledge Contest was successfully held on 5 July 2014. The contest aims to raise students’ interest in international affairs and knowledge of the nation’s foreign policy. The Foundation’s Trustee Tan Sri Dato’ David Chiu was was one of the officiating guests of the Final while Trustee Dr. Sumet Jiaravanon’s representative Ms. Li Xuhua; Council Members Mr. Thomas Woo and Mr. Dominic Pang; and Executive Director Ms. Karen Tang attended the event. Other officiating guests included Commissioner Song Zhe, Chief Secretary for Administration Mrs. Carrie Lam, Deputy Director of the Liaison Office of Central People’s Government in the HKSAR Mr. Yang Jianping, Under Secretary for Education Mr. Kevin Yeung, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan Affairs of MFA Mr. Ma Zhanwu and Deputy Director-General of the Information Department of MFA Ms. Hua Chunying.

Nearly 300 audiences attending the Final to enjoy the excellent performance of students
Around 300 audiences including students and teachers from primary and secondary schools enjoyed the Final and were amazed by the excellent performances of the finalists. The competition was fierce and the championship went to Po Leung Kuk Tung Yuk Tien College which scored 260.4 totally. CNEC Christian College and Sing Yin Secondary School won the Silver awards while Queen’s College, La Salle College and Baptist Lui Ming Choi Secondary School won the Bronze awards respectively. Invited by the Foundation, Member of the Basic Law Committee of the HKSAR Mr. Johnny Mok was one of the judges for the Final and other judges including Deputy Commissioner Tong Xiaoling, Vice President of China Institute of International Studies Mr. Guo Xiangang and Professor of China Foreign Affairs University Prof. Xiong Zhiyong.

To celebrate the success of the Contest and express our gratitude to our partnering organizations, the Foundation hosted a celebration dinner after the Final. Hosted by the Foundation’s Council Member Dr. Roy Chung, our Trustee Dr. Sumet Jiaravanon’s representative Ms. Li Xuhua; Council Members Mr. Thomas Woo, Mr. Leung Wai-fung and Mr. Samson Chan; and Executive Director Ms. Karen Tang also joined the dinner.

A study tour to Beijing and Guizhou will be organized for the students, teachers and principals of the winning teams in early August.
