On 2 February 2024, the Foundation held its annual spring luncheon to celebrate the Year of the Dragon with members. On 13 December 2023, the Foundation organized a series of meetings with the research team of the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), during their visit in Hong Kong. The meetings covered three important areas in Hong Kong, including finance, innovation and technology as well as talent development. The Foundation’s members, who are also experts in these areas, shared their in-depth and comprehensive observations and suggestions with the NDRC research team. On 30 November 2023, the 2023 Shanghai-Hong Kong Cooperation and Development Forum was successfully held in Shanghai. Jointly organized by the Better Hong Kong Foundation, the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Shanghai Committee, the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences (SASS), the theme of this year’s forum was “China’s Green Finance Standard: Roles and Functions of Shanghai and Hong Kong”. The forum provided a platform for entrepreneurs, government officials, experts and scholars from Shanghai and Hong Kong to have an in-depth discussion on strategic coordination and development paths in green finance, especially the role of Shanghai and Hong Kong in supporting the country’s green development. The Forum was supported by Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in Shanghai of the HKSAR Government. The Foundation’s Executive Committee Chairman Mr. Ronnie Chan gave an opening remark Mr. Paul Chan, Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government gave a keynote speech online The Foundation’s Executive Committee Chairman Mr. Ronnie Chan, Director of the Committee for Liaison with Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan & Overseas Chinese of Shanghai CPPCC Mr. Yao Hai together with Vice President of the SASS Prof. Zhu Guohong officiated at the opening ceremony. The Foundation has the honour of inviting the Financial Secretary of the HKSAR Government Mr. Paul Chan to deliver a keynote speech online. The Foundation’s Council Member Dr. Zhong Xiaofeng also spoke at the Forum while Executive Director Ms. Karen Tang chaired one of the sessions. As invited by the Foundation, Ms. Chaoni Huang, Executive Vice President of the Hong Kong Green Finance Association and Mr. Nick Pan, Head of Business Origination in CMB of Hang Seng Bank (China) shared their insights at the Forum. More than a hundred participants including heads of relevant government departments, experts and scholars, business representatives and media from Shanghai, Hong Kong and Beijing attended the Forum. Hong Kong is known to have a strong philanthropy history with leading donors, a financial hub, a gateway to Mainland China, and a deep talent pool in private wealth management. How can Hong Kong strengthen its attractiveness for private wealth owners, both individual and corporate, to engage in philanthropy? The Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society (CAPS) released a study sponsored by the Better Hong Kong Foundation (BHKF) on what a philanthropy hub is and what Hong Kong would need to do to become the pre-eminent philanthropy hub in Asia. Jointly organized by the CAPS and BHKF and supported by the ASHK, a luncheon forum entitled “Hong Kong as a Philanthropy Hub” was held on 23 February 2023 where participants could hear a keynote address from Mr. Christopher Hui, Secretary of Financial Services and the Treasury of the HKSAR Government, a presentation of the study by CAPS Co-Founder and Chief Executive Dr. Ruth Shapiro, and a conversation with the distinguished panelists on the potential, the strengths, and the needs of Hong Kong as a philanthropy hub. The panelists included President of Christie’s Asia Pacific Mr. Francis Belin, Chairman of the Financial Services Development Council Mr. Laurence Li, Director-General of Investment Promotion of Invest Hong Kong Mr. Stephen Phillips, Chief Executive Officer of J.P. Morgan Private Bank in Asia Ms. Kam Shing Kwang, Head and Chief Executive of UBS Hong Kong Ms. Amy Lo, and Regional Head of HSBC Private Banking, Asia Pacific Ms. Tan Siew Meng. On 27 June 2022, the Foundation was pleased to join a guided tour to the Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) which was arranged by the Museum Director Dr. Louis Ng, before its official opening. Led by the HKPM Head Curator Dr. Jiao Tianlong, the Foundation’s members and their spouses enjoyed a fabulous and eye-opening tour with interesting and informative sharing by Dr. Jiao.
