The Better Hong Kong Foundation congratulates the government for the deal it has reached with The Walt Disney Company announced today. George Yuen, Chief Executive of the Better Hong Kong Foundation agrees when Chief Secretary Anson Chan said that Disney is “a sound investment in Hong Kong’s future and one which Hong Kong could afford”.
This project reinforces Chief Executive Tung Chee Hwa’s vision for Hong Kong mentioned in his recent policy address where he stated that “Hong Kong should not only be a major Chinese city, but could become the most cosmopolitan city in Asia”. Disney, as one of the world’s best-known brand names brings with it world-class status. The Disney project is a huge boost to Hong Kong’s economy by bringing with it new jobs, long term capital expenditure and future tourist spending.
Before the realization of Disney in 2005, Mr. Yuen feels that there is a lot of work that Hong Kong must do to prepare itself such as better language training and upgrading our standards to improve on hospitality and customer service. On the other hand, Disney’s Magic Kingdom can be a showcase for technology and knowledge-based entertainment.
During construction of the Disney project, greatest care should be made to respect and protect the environment. A resource center to educate and inform Hong Kong people of the progress and commitment to the environment should be included in the plans. Ecological education should also be featured in the park.
Mr. Yuen said, “the Disney deal is not only a theme-park but comes at a time that will enhance the confidence of Hong Kong people to do well and overcome difficulties. We believe that this partnership between Hong Kong and Disney will spur people to work harder and to do much better in the future”.
