Hong Kong Journalism Workshop jointly organised by The Better Hong Kong Foundation and University of California, Los Angeles

The Better Hong Kong Foundation (BHKF) in collaboration with the Asia Pacific Media Network and the Pacific Rim Studies Center at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), is organising a Hong Kong Journalism Workshop in February, 1999. It offers an opportunity for members of the local media to gain greater exposure in the international arena and serves to enhance the quality and standard of media reporting in Hong Kong.

A selection panel comprised of members from the BHKF, the Hong Kong Journalists Association, the Hong Kong News Executives Association and the Department Heads of Journalism from the Baptist University and the Chinese University, has been set up to screen applicants beginning September 15, 1998.

The two-week workshop to be held in Los Angeles, will comprise concise courses on politics, journalism, mass communications, media economics and media management studies at UCLA, as well as meetings with top editors and journalists at the Los Angeles Times and other institutions. The BHKF is responsible for the return airfare from Hong Kong to Los Angeles, lodging, meals, and a living allowance.

Program Period: February 15 – 28, 1999.

Applicants must:

  • Have a good level of spoken and written English
  • Be a permanent resident of Hong Kong and have completed the majority of their formal education locally
  • Have 3 – 5 years experience of working as a journalist in Hong Kong
  • Submit an essay of not more than 500 words describing yourself and the reasons you wish to participate in the program
  • Obtain an endorsement from your employer for a leave of absence while attending the workshop
  • satisfy U.S. Immigration for travel to the United States
