1999.06.12

Fifty Hong Kong students with an excellent flair in writing and drawing will be given a great opportunity through participation in the “Hong Kong Together” Campaign to learn more about Hong Kong and mainland China this summer.

They are the winners of an essay competition for secondary school students and a drawing competition for primary school students organised jointly by the “Hong Kong Together” Campaign Joint Working Committee and the education sector. Presenting to them the trophies and certificates today were Director of Education, Mrs. Fanny Law and Executive Councillor and Chairman of the Education Commission, Mr. Antony Leung.

Mr. George Yuen, Convenor of the Joint Working Committee of the “Hong Kong Together” Campaign and Chief Executive of the Better Hong Kong Foundation said, “The essay and drawing competitions organized by ‘Hong Kong Together’ Campaign Joint Working Committee and the education sector aim to explore the talents of Hong Kong students in writing and art and to encourage an esprit de corps in Hong Kong.”

“In just 202 days, a new century will unfold. Hong Kong’s future lies in the hands of our younger generation. It is therefore important for our young people to constantly strive to improve themselves through the relentless pursuit of knowledge. It is also necessary for them to be resilient and perseverant in the face of challenges. In addition, young people should have a sense of responsibility for our community and be prepared to contribute to the future development of Hong Kong,” said Mr. Yuen.

The theme of the Chinese essay competition for the junior level (S 1 to 3) is “The Virtues of Chinese Traditions” and that for the senior level (S 4 to 7) is “Successful Examples in Countering Adversities in Chinese and Foreign History.” The theme of the drawing competition is “Building a Better Hong Kong Together.” Fifty outstanding pieces (20 from the essay competition and 30 from the drawing competition) have been selected from a plethora of works through two rounds of assessment by the judging panel comprising a number of adjudicators.

Winners of the essay competition will be able to attend a two-week language and culture course at the prestigious Tsinghua University in Beijing this summer with the sponsorship of airtickets by Dragonair. Winners of the drawing competition will join a “One-Day Tour in Hong Kong” to visit large-scale infrastructure and famous landmarks. The champions, first runners-up and second runners-up of all the categories also received trophies and book coupons. All of the winning students are each awarded a certificate.

Chairman of the Education Sub-group of the “Hong Kong Together” Campaign, Mr. Peter Lee said, “We hope all of the participants in the contests can thoroughly think through how they can overcome difficulties in the face of adversity and realize that solidarity is the key to success in ‘building a better Hong Kong together’.”
