Members of the public will enjoy free admission to an exciting racing day this season at the Shatin racecourse in support of the “Hong Kong Together” Campaign. The “Hong Kong Together” Cup Race, organised jointly by the “Hong Kong Together” Campaign Joint Working Committee and the Hong Kong Jockey Club, will be held on 17th January, 1999 (Sunday) as a continued effort to unite the community and to boost the spirit of sportsmanship following Hong Kong’s unprecedented success in the Asian Games.
“Horse racing has always been a way-of-life in Hong Kong symbolising the city’s dynamism and vitality. It is a form of entertainment as well as a sport enjoyed by millions of Hong Kong people that epitomises the determination and commitment held by our entire community. These are the qualities that will help Hong Kong recover from the current economic challenges – and that is why the “Hong Kong Together” Joint Working Committee and the Hong Kong Jockey Club are proud to organise this very special event,” said Mr. George Yuen, Convenor of the “Hong Kong Together” Campaign Joint Working Committee and Chief Executive of the Better Hong Kong Foundation.
Mr. Kim Mak, Director of Corporate Development of the Hong Kong Jockey Club said, “The Hong Kong Jockey Club was delighted to offer free use of its Happy Valley Racecourse for the “Hong Kong Together” Campaign kick-off ceremony held last month, and likewise, we look forward to hosting the “Hong Kong Together” Cup on January 17th.” Mr. Mak pointed out that over the past several decades, the Hong Kong Jockey Club and the community have continuously worked hard together to enhance Hong Kong’s living environment. Victoria Park, the Hong Kong Sports Institute, the Hong Kong Arts Festival and the air pollution index frequently quoted by the media were all sponsored or built by the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
“The Hong Kong Jockey Club has extended financial assistance to some organisations originally sponsored by the Community Chest. This is to minimize the disruption to welfare services due to the economic downturn. This is a good example of the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s determination to carry out the spirit of Hong Kong togetherness,” Mr. Mak continued.
Free admission to the Shatin Racecourse Public Stand on “Hong Kong Together” Cup Race Day will be granted to the public aged 18 and over wearing a “Hong Kong Together” heart-shaped logo sticker. The stickers will be available starting tomorrow at major shopping malls, restaurants, retail outlets and hotels when people shop, dine and patronize these locations (please see the attached list of these locations as well as other publicity materials).
A lucky draw also will be held immediately following the “Hong Kong Together” Cup race that will include prizes from more than 36 hotels throughout Hong Kong as well as a night’s stay in the Miramar Hotel’s Imperial China Suite and a buffet lunch or dinner for four. A dinner coupon for a $10,000 deluxe abalone dinner will be given away during the lucky draw.
“Hong Kong Together” is a community-led confidence building campaign aimed at uniting all sectors of community and motivating Hong Kong people to work together to instill public confidence. This initiative encourages public togetherness as well as engenders much-valued civic spirit in the community. The Better Hong Kong Foundation together with representatives from various participating sectors in the community form the Joint Working Committee steering the Campaign.
